Josh Heupel continued the Tennessee tradition of beating Kentucky Saturday night, getting his 3rd win over the Wildcats in as many games.
Kentucky kept things close throughout the game, but ultimately the Vols were able to hold the Wildcats off and pick up their 6th win of the season.
It was a complete game from Tennessee after last week’s second-half collapse against Alabama, and now the Vols have regained some confidence and momentum before a tough November slate.
After the game, Heupel praised his team’s effort and energy throughout the contest.
“I love the effort and energy that we played with,” Heupel said. “At the end of the day, winning on the road in this league’s really tough. That’s a good football team that we played tonight. Proud of the effort from our guys. We’ve got to play smarter as we continue to go. Got to be better in the redzone offensively, but we’ll take it, it’s a good win in the league.”
It was the Vols’ running backs that led the way offensively, picking up 254 yards with Jaylen Wright notching 120 of those.
“Deep room, got some young guys in there too that are really good,” Heupel said. “They’re smart, they’re competitive, they run hard. Do a great job of reading what’s going on up front. The 5 bigs were great tonight. Tight ends were awesome, and passing game was good enough, it was a good win.”
Tennessee will take on UConn next week before back-t0-back big games against Missouri and Georgia.
