Tennessee kicked off its season with a 38-6 thrashing of Bowling Green last Thursday night in what was Josh Heupel’s debut as the Volunteers head coach.

The game did provide a significant injury scare for Tennessee, as starting center Cooper Mays left the contest early on with an apparent ankle injury.

During his scheduled media availability Monday, Heupel addressed the status of the 6-3, 295-pound sophomore, and the news was positive.

“Cooper’s in the building today moving around,” Heupel said. “As the week moves along, we’ll get a better feel of if he’ll be 100% for kickoff.”

If Mays can’t go Saturday for the Vos game against Pittsburgh, Jerome Carvin, who finished the game at center against the Falcons, will likely get the call, with Ollie Lane replacing Carvin at left guard.

Also on Monday, Heupel discussed the status of wide receiver Jimmy Calloway, who missed the Bowling Green game due to injury.

“We do expect Jimmy to be back,” said Heupel.

Calloway, a 6-foot, 190-pound sophomore, caught two passes for 20 yards as a freshman in 2020.
