Jumpman backfire? North Carolina forced to suspend 13 players by the NCAA
North Carolina’s football program has been caught by the NCAA once again. While the school’s basketball program appears to be untouchable in terms of receiving penalties, the football program has earned a reputation for getting busted by the NCAA.
The latest incident involves the school’s biggest star Michael Jordan — in a roundabout way.
Jordan’s Jumpman Nike division has been adopted by a few select schools around the nation — North Carolina and Florida among them — and while the players get the gear free of charge through the athletic department, the only catch is they are not permitted to turn around and sell the Nike/Jumpman gear they receive for playing at the school.
According to North Carolina, 13 football players did just that and the NCAA has come down with a few suspensions as a result. OL Brian Anderson, DE Malik Carney, WR Beau Corrales, DE Tomon Fox, DE Tyrone Hopper, OL Quiron Johnson, LB Malik Robinson, QB Chazz Surratt and OL Jordan Tucker will all miss four games of the upcoming season following their involvement.
DBs Greg Ross and Tre Shaw will each miss two games, while QB Jack Davidson and OL Jonah Melton will each miss one game.
The NCAA has permitted UNC to stagger the suspensions so as not to create devastating depth issues for the football program.
Here’s the official statement from the school:
