Kalen DeBoer gives mixed assessment of Alabama’s defense at midway mark

Kalen DeBoer was on top of the college world after Alabama knocked off Georgia, 41-34, in an overtime classic 3 weeks ago to move to No. 1 in the country. However, it hasn’t been the same since then for the Crimson Tide.

First, there was the stunning loss to Vanderbilt 2 weeks ago. Last week, with an opportunity to make amends for that loss, the Crimson Tide had to hang on for dear life to escape with a 27-25 win against South Carolina.

The defense has had some struggles recently, especially with allowing opponents to sustain the drive. The Commodores were 12-of-18 on 3rd downs, while South Carolina was 7-of-15.

This was something that DeBoer talked about in his press conference, as Alabama just can’t get off the field.

“Every week there is something a little different that presents itself,” DeBoer said. “The last couple of weeks the big thing that has been focused on is getting off the field. You look at yards per play, and we are making teams earn it, but we just got to get off the field. When those drives continue to stack on top each other, and there’s more plays your defense has to play, it begins to wear you down.”

Up next is an offense that has really struggled the past few weeks in Tennessee, as the Volunteers have scored only 62 points in their last 3 games. In their first 3 games of the season, Tennessee scored 69, 51 and 70.
