With Ty Simpson headed for the 2026 NFL Draft, Alabama will have a new quarterback under center next season. It’s still early in the offseason but head coach Kalen DeBoer is already pleased with the progress of Austin Mack and Keelon Russell as they battle for the starting spot.
The seldom-used redshirt sophomore Mack began his college career at Washington in 2023 alongside DeBoer before following the head coach to Alabama. Meanwhile, the highly touted freshman Russell is the No. 2 prospect from the Class of 2025.
“I love the aggressiveness that they have. They’re not gun-shy. They go and make plays,” DeBoer said. “Attacking whenever they get the right opportunities with the throws and they’re making the throws. The guys are coming through and making the plays for them with the catches.”

DeBoer believes both quarterbacks are making excellent strides that should make for a compelling competition.
“I think they’re gaining more confidence in the offensive line each and every day. That’s going to take time,” DeBoer said. “We know there’s a lot of faces up front but they’re clear with their communication. There’s not a lot that’s catching them off-guard. They can go out and let their skills speak for themselves and make plays.”
Alabama kicks off the season with a home matchup vs. East Carolina on Sept. 5.
