NFL teams were busy making roster cuts on Saturday to meet the league-mandated 53-player limit at the deadline. For the Kansas City Chiefs, that included waiving/releasing 9 players from SEC schools.
The Cheifs parted with the following SEC alums:
- Gehrig Dieter, Alabama
- Braxton Hoyett, Mississippi State
- Chris Lammons, South Carolina
- Devaroe Lawrence, Auburn
- Kalija Lipscomb, Vanderbilt
- Justice Shelton-Mosley, Vanderbilt
- Breeland Speaks, Ole Miss
- Jordan Ta’amu, Ole Miss
- Darryl Williams, Mississippi State
The Chiefs website listed those 9 players on a “waived/released” list. In the NFL, players a “non-vested player” (less than 4 years of service) goes through the waiver process when his contract is terminated. A vested veteran is granted an immediate release up until the season’s trade deadline. After the deadline, veteran players go through waivers as well.
In addition to the 9 let go, the Cheifs placed former Mississippi State lineman Martinas Rankin on the reserve/PUP (physically unable to perform) list.
