The Pinellas County Sheriff’s office announced that former Alabama football and Tampa Bay Buccaneers player Keith McCants was found dead in St. Petersburg, Florida. He was 53.

Bays News 9 reports that police were called to  2833 62nd Ave. N. in St. Petersburg for an unresponsive male. McCants was the fourth overall pick by the Tampa Bay Bucs in the 1990 draft. He also played for the Arizona Cardinals and Houston Oilers, then retired in 1995.

McCants had fallen on hard times over the years and talked about his troubles on the ESPN 30 for 30 documentary “Broke.”

McCants said to Bama Online last year he was suffering from degenerative bone disease and had a hip replacement.

He also had a radio talk show and still kept in contact with former football greats such as Cornelius Bennett, George Teague, and former Dallas Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith.

Bay News 9 reports no word yet on the cause of McCants’ death.
