It’s rough right now for Kent State.
Sure, the Golden Flashes won their season-opener to snap a 21-game losing streak last weekend. But the good vibes did not last. They trailed No. 24 Texas Tech 48-0 at the halftime break on Saturday and, during the second quarter, may have pulled off one of the worst snaps in recent memory.
Kent State center Dustyn Morell tried to snap the ball to his quarterback on a third-and-3 play near midfield. The ball just didn’t move.
Texas Tech’s Anthony Holmes Jr. recovered the fumble, and Texas Tech went on to kick a field goal to go up 41-0.
The turnover was Kent State’s second of the first half. On the previous drive, Kent State threw a pick-6.
And that was after a drive that finally produced a first down. Kent State turned it over on downs on its first drive of the game, losing 13 yards in the process. It went 3-and-out on each of its next 4 drives. The interception — which was returned 55 yards for a score — came 2 plays after a 38-yard gain produced the Golden Flashes’ first first down of the afternoon.
Barring a miraculous second-half comeback, Kent State appears to be headed for a 23rd straight loss against an FBS team. The football program last beat an FBS opponent on Nov. 26, 2022. Kent State hasn’t beaten a power conference opponent since 2007.
