Kentucky didn’t have a special teams coordinator last season as duties were divided among assistant coaches.
That’s not the case anymore.
According to Jon Hale of the Courier-Journal, outside linebackers coach Andy Buh has been promoted to special teams coordinator. Despite Buh being given the title, other Wildcats assistants will continue to help with special teams.
In December, the Courier-Journal reported that Buh turned down an opportunity to become the special teams coordinator at a Power 5 school.
Buh was in charge of the team’s kickoff and punt units in his first season in Lexington in 2015. Kentucky ranked 11th in the SEC in opponent yards per kickoff return (20.8) and 7th in opponent yards per punt return (10.2).
Although that doesn’t seem impressive, it’s a big improvement from 2014, when the Wildcats ranked dead last in covering punts (12.7). As far as covering kickoffs, the school was 12th (22.5). Plus, UK had allowed four return TDs that season (punts and kickoffs), the most in the SEC.
