The Kentucky Wildcats plucked quarterback Zach Calzada out of the transfer portal hoping he’d ignite their passing attack. The results weren’t what Mark Stoops hoped for, so he’s going in another direction.

On Monday, the Wildcats released their depth chart for their Week 5 trip to South Carolina. After 3 games, redshirt freshman Cutter Boley has ascended to the top spot at quarterback, knocking Calzada into the backup role.

Boley started Kentucky’s Week 3 contest versus Eastern Michigan after Calzada was ruled out with a shoulder injury. The Hodgenville, KY native completed 12 of 21 passes (57.1%) for 240 yards and 2 touchdowns in the Wildcats’ 48-23 victory over the Eagles. Calzada, a seventh-year collegiate passer, racked up just 234 passing yards combined in Kentucky’s matchups with Toledo and Ole Miss.

The Wildcats have been trying to live off the transfer portal at quarterback for the past half-decade. Will Levis, Devin Leary, Brock VandaGriff and Calzada all went to Lexington after beginning their careers elsewhere. Kentucky’s last “homegrown” starting signal-caller was Terry Wilson, who committed to the Wildcats out of Garden City Community College.

Boley was the No. 3 overall recruit — and top QB prospect — from the Bluegrass State in 2024, per 247Sports’ Composite rankings. His first road start will come in one of the SEC’s most hostile environments, against one of its best quarterbacks — LaNorris Sellers — at night. The tests don’t get much tougher, but Big Blue Nation is hoping he’s up to the task.

Kickoff between the Wildcats and Gamecocks is set for 7:45 p.m. E.T. on Sept. 27 (SEC Network).
