Kentucky signal-caller Drew Barker has been out of action since the Sep. 22 game versus New Mexico State. A chronic back injury has taken away what was expected to be a breakout season for the sophomore.

According to head coach Mark Stoops, Barker will be officially done for the year with season-ending surgery:

A native of the state, Barker was regarded as one of the top Kentucky high school prospects. He was supposed to lead the emergence of this program under Stoops.

However, the persistent back troubles have limited his effectiveness and availability. During the season opening loss to Southern Miss, Barker threw for 323 yards and four touchdowns. The following week versus Florida, he was victimized by throwing three interceptions. Barker finished 2-of-10 for 10 yards — and was pulled for the current starter Stephen Johnson.

There’s no word on how long Barker will be sidelined for.
