After media runaround, Steele decides to leave LSU for Auburn to fill same role
Is he staying or going?
After conflicting reports in regards to whether Kevin Steele would stay at LSU as defensive coordinator or assume the same role at Auburn, Steele is officially headed to AU.
Coach Gus Malzahn put the speculation to rest by announcing the hire after Auburn beat Memphis 31-10 in the Birmingham Bowl. Steele replaces Will Muschamp, who departed to assume the head coaching role at South Carolina.
This was only Steele’s first completed season as LSU’s defensive coordinator, where he was replacing legendary defensive coordinator John Chavis.
At LSU, Steele also served as linebackers coach this season. He’s also made stops as a defensive coordinator at two schools who are in the playoff this season, Alabama and Clemson.
According to The Advocate’s Ross Dellenger, there were several reasons why Steele took the job.
Source said #LSU was not getting into a bidding war for Steele and that Bama's state retirement played a role as well.

Steele padded his resume behind LSU’s spectacular defensive performance on Tuesday. Steele’s unit held Texas Tech’s potent offense to just 19 points and 189 yards.
Glenn Guilbeau tweeted out details of Steele’s new contract.
Kevin Steele will make in neighborhood of $1.4 million at Auburn – up from $1 million at LSU.
