As more and more players opt out of non-College Football Playoff bowl games, it’s worth wondering what can be done to keep elite guys around for these bowls.

One solution? Expand the Playoff. The thought is that if there are 8 teams or more, those teams’ top players will want to stick around to compete for a title.

Ahead of Friday’s Peach Bowl between Georgia and Cincinnati, coach Kirby Smart said he favors expanding the Playoff, but not to 8 teams. He said he’d go all the way to 12 teams:

Going from 4 to 12 seems like it’ll be tough to do, but calls to expand to 8 teams have been growing louder recently.

We’ll see what happens this offseason, but it’ll be tough for the Playoff to ignore the chatter happening around expansion for much longer.
