That last time Kirby Smart faced a triple-option offense was in 2011 when he was Alabama’s defensive coordinator. Georgia Southern rushed for 302 yards in a 45-21 loss to the Crimson Tide.

Smart now faces that challenge again as Georgia’s head coach in his first rivalry game against Georgia Tech. Paul Johnson’s Yellow Jackets run the triple-option out the flexbone, an offense full of motions and misdirection.

It’s a difficult offense to run and even more difficult to stop, but Smart thinks he has some scout-team players capable of simulating the system.

Smart during a Monday news conference reeled off a handful of players who will run the triple-option in practice, most notably fourth-string quarterback Sam Vaughn. Defensive backs Tim Hill and Caleeb Roberson will also emulate Georgia Tech’s quarterback and slot backs.

Running backs Prather Hudson and Ian Donald-McIntyre are expected to fill in as the Yellow Jackets’ fullbacks, who sometimes take dive handoffs in addition to blocking.

The Bulldogs (7-4) will host Georgia Tech (7-4) at 12 p.m. ET on Saturday.
