It comes as no surprise, but Kirby Smart made it abundantly clear who Georgia’s starting QB is coming out of spring practices.

Last spring, it was JT Daniels who had the starting job heading into the fall. He would not hold onto it as Bennett eventually overtook Daniels for the spot.

Bennett would struggle in the SEC Championship Game vs. Alabama but did not fold. He bounced back against Michigan and again against Alabama in the College Football Playoff to lead the Bulldogs to the national title.

During his press conference wrapping up the spring, Smart was asked if Bennett’s experience and late-season heroics were enough to keep the QB as the starter coming out of spring. Smart did not mince words, saying he doesn’t need to say Bennett is the starter because the team knows he is:

“I don’t have to say that,” Smart explained. “Our team knows Stetson’s our QB, know what I mean?

“Stetson’s done a tremendous job. Stetson has been an incredible leader, done what we’ve asked, and you know what? The other two guys have gotten a whole lot better…Stetson knows where he stands on our team.”

Of course, it remains a possibility that Bennett loses the starting role, but that will be dependent on his play this season. But for now, he’s shown he has at least earned the right to keep the starting job with the Bulldogs.
