Kirby Smart has a history of working with a member of Florida’s staff.

Austin Armstrong, Florida’s defensive coordinator, was a member of Smart’s staff at Georgia in 2019 as a quality control coach. Ahead of the matchup between Georgia and Florida on Saturday, Smart recalled working with Armstrong and had high-praise for the defensive-minded coach.

“He comes from a really good defensive background, pedigree, lineage before he came to us,” Smart said during the SEC coaches teleconference Wednesday. “Part of the reason we brought him with us is that he had ties to a lot of the similar schemes that we had run and knew that he would be an asset in terms of knowledge, experience, maybe bring something to the table for us that might be different outside the box thinking. So it was great experience. I think he learned a lot from us in terms of recruiting style, our defensive tree and you know when you get things like that you get an energetic young coach, it’s a benefit for both parties so I think it worked both ways.”

Armstrong’s background working with Georgia certainly helped him to get to his position he’s in today, and the Gators have been solid on the defensive end this season.

They will be looking for a big game out of the defense on Saturday against the Bulldogs as Florida tries to go for a big upset. Georgia is gunning for another CFP appearance, and a loss to Florida would certainly derail that, so the Bulldogs will be bringing their A-game to Jacksonville on Saturday.
