Kirby Smart has things clicking at Georgia after back-to-back national titles for the program. However, the focus within the program is on winning another title, and that hunt begins this weekend.
During Tuesday’s press conference, Smart revealed the Bulldogs are a bit thin at one position group entering Week 1. He acknowledged people keep talking about the wide receiver room for Georgia, but he doesn’t see enough depth in the group to start the season.
“I feel like we’re thin at wideout, everybody keeps talking about this receiving corps, I’m like we are thin,” said Smart. “We just don’t have enough depth there, we just don’t have enough in our 2-deep to finish practice. It makes it tough. We got guys dinged up, guys injured so it makes it a little harder.”
At the end of the day, Smart says that doesn’t impact how Georgia plans any type of rotation at receiver. The standard for the group is still winning football, and the Bulldogs will play the individuals that reach that mark.
Entering Week 1, Smart cited 6-7 receivers hitting the bar of “winning football” with another group of 3-4 players right on the line.
“I don’t know that you have a rotation, the year LSU won the national championship I believe 95% of the snaps were 3 receivers. They were 3 really good receivers, so you play the players that give you a chance to play,” Smart explained. “We have a bar and we say this is winning football above it, and this is losing football below it. And if you can play winning football we’re going to give you opportunities and chances to play.”
The Bulldogs will have some new faces this fall, most notably at quarterback with Carson Beck replacing 2-time champion Stetson Bennett. Nevertheless, Georgia maintains the best National Championship odds as the program looks for the ultra-rare 3-peat.
