Kirby Smart has been at the center of a viral controversy after video showed him shoving Mississippi State QB Michael Van Buren out of the way during Saturday’s game. He commented on the incident following the game, insisting he was unaware what had happened in the moment. Instead, he says he was heading for DC Glenn Schumann.

On Monday at his weekly press conference, Smart further commented on the matter. He told reporters that as soon as he realized what had happened he contacted both MSU head coach Jeff Lebby and Van Buren, insisting he had no ill will towards the Bulldogs QB.

No flags were thrown on the play and Van Buren commented after that game that he also was mostly unaware of what happened. Both parties involved were simply locked in to the game.

Some on social media were (and are) furious with Smart for his actions, but most seem to agree that Smart had no intentions to be hostile towards Van Buren. Given his comments and Van Buren’s from after the game, it’s tough to imagine much more coming from this situation.

Georgia is back in action this weekend against No. 1 Texas in what could very well be the most important game of the season in the SEC.
