Kirby Smart spoke with ABC’s Holly Rowe at halftime of Georgia’s Week 5 game vs. Alabama on Saturday night.

It’s been a deflating start to the game for the Bulldogs, who trail 30-7 at the break. Georgia has had no solutions for Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe, who put together a dominant first half offensively at quarterback.

UGA quarterback Carson Beck, by contrast, had a first half to forget. He threw 2 interceptions and took a safety late in the first half. He went just 8-for-17 for 100 yards before the break.

Smart believes the bigger issues are on the defensive side of the ball, however.

“The most important thing is we’ve got to get some stops,” Smart said. “Alabama’s been really explosive tonight. We’ve had no answer for Milroe. He’s a great athlete, a phenomenal athlete. We’ve struggled to tackle him. We don’t have the edges. They’ve done a really good job of throwing with him out of empty, and that’s been new.

“But we’ve got to get some stops. Our offense hasn’t been bad, we just can’t get our offense on the field. And we haven’t stopped [Milroe] and we’ve turned the ball over.”

Georgia averaged 5.5 yards per play in the first half, which is well below-average for what you’d expect from a Bulldogs’ offense. UGA is also 0-for-5 on third down at halftime.

Smart is just 1-5 all-time against Alabama. The Crimson Tide have won 8 of the last 9 meetings in this matchup.
