Kirby Smart is trying to reset the Georgia program following the national championship, and he offered his latest assessment following practice on Tuesday.
“We’re not where we need to be with leadership, guys challenging guys,” Smart said. “I was a little disappointed in (today’s) practice.”
About his own job as head coach, Smart said he tries to avoid complacency because that will be the killer of us all and added, “I look at every day is independent of the other.”
Smart said that the only thing that changes is the team, but he doesn’t get into a routine because that causes complacency.
As the roster turned over from last year, Smart, who is in his seventh season, revealed an alarming development about 2 positions.
“Receiver and DB, we have never been this thin,” he said, and called the situation a position of concern for recruiting and development.
Speaking about a now well-known defensive back, Kelee Ringo, who made a memorable pick-6 in the national championship game, Smart said, “I don’t think that play won the game. I would argue that the offensive drive prior to that won it. He can’t let that play distract or delay his development.”
