Most defensive backs are taught to have a short-term memory. If you lose a rep, move on and forget about it.

But Georgia’s Ellis Robinson IV isn’t like most defensive backs.

The freshman stud was honored this past Monday with the FWAA/Spurrier Defensive Freshman of the Year award, and his head coach, Kirby Smart, shared a story with the crowd that clued Smart in on just how competitive Robinson is as a player.

“I’m going up to him. I’m like, “Ellis, what’s going on? Did somebody say something to you? What are you upset about?'” Smart said. “He’s like, ‘They caught a pass on me.’ And I’m like, “Oh, God, if you’re upset about that now, you’re going to have to get used to that. These are good players.’ He’s like, ‘I ain’t getting used to that. I ain’t used to that. Nobody caught a pass on me at IMG the entire year.’ It was one-on-ones. There was no pass rush. I was like, ‘You’ve got to settle down.’ I knew right away we had a fierce competitor who was pissed off when people catch the ball on him.”

Robinson broke out this year after only playing in 4 games as a true freshman, and it’s clear that his mentality was a huge part of it. He totaled 20 tackles, 7 passes defended, and 4 interceptions, tied for the most in the SEC.

Georgia currently has an 8% chance to win the SEC next season. Here’s a look at the latest odds via Kalshi:
