Kirby Smart and Sonny Dykes have been busy preparing to face each other with a College Football Playoff title on the line.
But the Georgia and TCU coaches have also been busy recruiting, as we’re in the midst of the Early Signing Period.
On Sunday, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey criticized the current college football calendar, saying he’d like to do away with the Early Signing Period.
Smart and Dykes both echoed those sentiments during the CFP media day on Sunday in Los Angeles. Smart cited the differences between the current calendar and the way things were when he started coaching:
Georgia HC Kirby Smart on the sport's current calendar: "It's not the profession that I originally got into in terms of relationships and coaching. It's changed so much … We're all to blame for kind of eating your own. It's kind of a cannibalizing because you won't stop"

Dykes called out the absurdity of hosting recruits on campus while simultaneously preparing to play in the national title game:
Dykes: "We had six transfers on campus this week for visits. And you're like, really? Are we really doing this? That's just the way it is now. Those were 18 hour days before and now they're 20 hour days. I'm not complaining. I can do something else, but…"

Will we see things change this offseason? That remains to be seen, but it is clear many in the business are getting fed up with the time demands of the current college football calendar.
