Kirby Smart reeled another highly-ranked class on Wednesday, as some recruits were still pending their decisions. But make no mistake, it’s an elite defensive backs class.
Three of Georgia’s top 4 recruits by early Wednesday afternoon were defensive backs, led by Malaki Starks of Jefferson, Georgia, Jaheim Singletary of Jacksonville, Florida and Daylen Everette of Bradenton, Florida.
At a press conference, Smart spoke about the elite DB class in general.
“I don’t think you ever know exactly what you have. The length and the speed is what checks out the most. We like to have length, toughness and intelligence. I think now more than ever it’s easier to liability in coverage. Your guys that can’t cover, it’s almost out of control. They’re going to help us but there’s still not enough of them,” Smart said.
But there’s still work to be done.
“We don’t have enough DBs now. We don’t have enough,” Smart said. “We’re still lower than we’ve ever been. We have more leaving then we have coming. You’re actually negative net gain. We’re still behind at the defensive back position. We have not been able to play dime packages. I’m really proud of the DBs we have in this class.
Of course, the quarterback in the class is Gunner Stockton, a 4-star, and the No. 7 QB in this class.
“The recruitment of Gunner was really interesting,” Smart said. “I’ve known Gunner since he was a kid. I’ve known his dad for a long time when his dad hosted me on a visit to Georgia Southern. Tremendous character. I don’t know if you could raise a finer young man. Of the attention-seeking people, he’s never done.”
