Kirby Smart was asked about the status of TE Lawson Luckie at Saturday’s press conference. This season will be Luckie’s first with Georgia.
Luckie was a former 4-star TE via the 2023 class. The 247Sports Composite ranked him as the No. 8 prospect at his position.
Smart described Luckie’s outlook as week-to-week. Luckie has been dealing with an ankle injury that required surgery.
“It’s week-to-week. I won’t know exactly what it is. We’ve had Arian Smith who came back in 3-4 weeks with a similar injury, but we’ve also had guys take 5 or 6 weeks to come back. I can’t tell you that. It’ll be how he handles it, the pain tolerance and the recovery. Our staff is gonna do the best they can to get him back.”
It would be unfortunate if Luckie is unable to suit up for the Bulldogs in Week 1 because of the injury.
Luckie is a Georgia legacy. His father, Mike Luckie, played for Georgia in the 90s. Mike was one of three Luckie brothers to play for Georgia during that time.
We’ll see if Luckie can recover in time for the season opener. Georgia is facing UT Martin on Sept. 2.
Kickoff will be at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
Here’s the full interview from Smart. His comments on Luckie begin at the 6:25 mark.
