Kirk Herbstreit names his top-performing coaches from Week 13 including 5 from SEC
Kirk Herbstreit always identifies the players, coaches, and teams in college football that impressed him the most after each week. Week 13 was a wild one, so the analyst had plenty to choose from.
When it came to coaches, Herbstreit picked 5 total coaches from the SEC, 1 from the B1G, 2 from the Big 12, and 1 from an independent.

Herbstreit gave the top spot to Oklahoma’s Brent Venables and Bill Bedenbaugh. The Sooners pulled off an incredible upset of Alabama and allowed the Crimson Tide to score just 3 points. Bedenbaugh’s patchwork offensive line allowed just 1 sack against the vaunted Tide defense.
At the No. 2 spot, Herbstreit went with another set of coaches that pulled off a big upset. Florida’s Billy Napier and Ron Roberts were selected after ruining Ole Miss’ season and holding the high-powered offense to 17 points.
Sticking in the SEC, Herbstreit went with Auburn’s Hugh Freeze at No. 3. Freeze led the Tigers to a 4OT upset win over Texas A&M. Ohio State’s Jim Knowles was the selection at No. 4 after his defense stifled Indiana, holding the Hoosiers to 15 points.
At No. 5 and No. 6, Herbstreit went with 2 Big 12 coaches: Kenny Dillingham and Brian Borland. Dillingham’s Arizona State team knocked off BYU and put themselves in contention for the Big 12 crown. Borland’s Kansas defense, meanwhile, held high-powered Colorado to 21 points.
Finally, Notre Dame’s Al Golden got the No. 7 spot. Golden’s defense held Army to 14 points, which was tied for their lowest point total of the season.
