Kirk Herbstreit names the biggest problem with Alabama’s defense in 2020

The Alabama defense hasn’t been as elite as we’re used to seeing in Tuscaloosa in 2020. Last week, Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss Rebels put up 48 points on the Tide.
Heading into Saturday night’s game against Georgia, the defense will need to step up, because Georgia’s defense is perhaps the best in the country.
So, what’s the biggest problem with Alabama’s defense? During an appearance on SportsCenter on Saturday morning, analyst Kirk Herbstreit pinned it on communication (via 247Sports):
“The big thing I’ve evaluated and seen with Alabama is they have talent obviously, but it’s communication,” Herbstreit said. “Georgia would do a very good job of using some tempo, bunch formations, motion … forcing Alabama to have to communicate with unusual formations. Anything that you can make them think and look and make adjustments to is what I think Georgia will do.
“They’re not going to do what Lane Kiffin did. They don’t have the players or the scheme to do that, but they’ll have their own version of going tempo. Anything you can do to get Alabama’s defense eon their heels and confused … just four or five times and you’ve got to capitalize and hit a big one when the ball is snapped.”
Can the Tide slow down Stetson Bennett IV and the Georgia offense? We’ll find out at 8 p.m. Eastern time on CBS.
