Shaky officiating has been a major storyline in college football so far this season, especially in the SEC.

The officiating in the AuburnGeorgia games a couple of weeks ago, in particular, made headlines due to the controversial goal-line fumble ruling that was made at the end of the first half that took a potential touchdown off the board for Auburn.

This was all brought back to the forefront earlier in the week when it was reported that the head official in charge of that game, Ken Williamson, had been suspended by the SEC due to several complaints the league office received over the officiating during that matchup. That development that shocked ESPN analyst and College GameDay host Kirk Herbstreit.

“I think that this is groundbreaking,” Herbstreit said on the Pat McAfee show on Thursday. “Can you guys remember anything like this? Where a guy, in the middle of a season, is asked to take a seat? I’ve never heard of anything like this. You talk about holding players and coaches and everybody accountable, but referees have never really had to deal with that. Maybe in the offseason, but not in season. I think it’s an eye opener, and I’m a pro-referee guy, but I’m interested to see where this leads to.”

Week 9 of SEC action is set to begin on Saturday.
