Kirk Herbstreit handed out his annual preseason Herbie Awards on Friday ahead of Week 0’s college football action.
One of those awards went to the person the longtime ESPN college football analyst is most excited to see in 2025. And it went to none other than North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick.
Of course, all eyes are on the legendary former New England Patriots head coach as he prepares for his first game as the Tar Heels’ head coach. After nearly a quarter-century with the Pats, who he led to 6 Super Bowl wins, he’s been tasked with turning around the fortunes of the Heels after Mack Brown’s departure.
While Herbstreit is most excited to see Belichick, that doesn’t necessarily mean that he thinks it was the best hire in college football during the offseason. That honor went to Rich Rodriguez, who returns to West Virginia nearly 2 decades after a successful spell at his alma mater.
As for Belichick, Herbstreit won’t have to wait much longer to see the Tar Heels’ head man — and his trademark hoodies — debut on the North Carolina sideline. The Tar Heels open their season on Labor Day as they welcome TCU to Kenan Stadium.
While Belichick’s body of work in the pros speaks for itself, we’ll see if it translates to the college level.
