Kirk Herbstreit gave a glass-half-full opinion of LSU’s season-opening loss to Florida State on Sunday night.
Herbstreit, who was on the call for ABC, said LSU will be “fine” despite the loss. Herbstreit cited “missed opportunities” and said the Tigers would be able to “recalibrate” moving forward.
Herbstreit also mentioned star defensive lineman Maason Smith, who will be eligible to return to LSU’s lineup next week after serving a 1-game suspension.
Fun game to call tonight. Congratulations @FSUFootball on a big win-great to see such a talented team and great culture back in Tallahassee. Look forward to watching this team grow every week. And @LSUfootball is gonna be fine-tough loss-missed opportunities-gotta learn from this…

Indeed, LSU did miss several opportunities in this game. The Tigers failed to convert on 4th down twice in the 1st half, leaving as many as 14 points on the board.
LSU also muffed a punt and threw a game-changing interception in the 2nd half that flipped the momentum in Florida State’s favor.
LSU star Harold Perkins was also a relative non-factor in this game after being asked to play a large percentage of snaps in coverage rather than as a pass rusher. That decision was the subject of some strong criticism from LSU fans and media on Sunday night.
LSU will host Grambling State in Week 2.
