The traffic stop that led to two Tennessee football players being cited for marijuana possession late Tuesday night began because a headlight was out, according to a statement from Knoxville Police.

Knoxville ABC affiliate WATE reported that John Kelly and Will Ignont were cited for marijuana. The statement from the police was posted by ESPN’s Mark Schlabach. The owner of the vehicle, Kelly, gave consent to search the vehicle.

The school has said it is aware of the situation that police said happened at 10:46 p.m. on Tuesday and “looking into it” and would not have any other comment at this time.

When they approached the vehicle, police said they noticed a smell coming from the vehicle, which appeared to resemble that of marijuana. They searched the vehicle and found the pot, as well as a glass pipe.

Since the items were in the console and neither person claimed ownership of them, they were each cited with each of the items found.
