Lane Kiffin describes his relationship with Kirby Smart ahead of crucial matchup
Lane Kiffin has a big matchup against Kirby Smart and Georgia on Saturday in a game that could be season-defining for both teams.
But before the pair of head coaches were dominating the SEC, they worked under Nick Saban at Alabama. Kiffin was the Tide’s offensive coordinator from 2014-2016, and Smart was the team’s defensive coordinator from 2008 to 2015.
Ahead of the matchup, Kiffin discussed his relationship with Smart.
“I think it’ll probably surprise people. I think part of it was him being in the East and not playing every year,” Kiffin said during the SEC coaches teleconference. “We’ve gone 3 years without playing them and then FAU 3 years before that. When he was at Georgia (my) last year at Alabama we still talked. I just think Kirby’s really smart and I really enjoy talking to really smart and intelligent coaches that you can bounce things off of or ask them how do they do things, or how do they deal with a player issue, an injury or something. So he’s one of my first calls a lot of times when I’m looking for advice.”
The game is setting up to be a fun one between 2 of the best coaches in the conference. Georgia is looking to keep its schedule unblemished as the Bulldogs try and claim a 3rd-straight national championship, and Ole Miss is looking for a signature win late in the season.
