When new Tennessee AD John Curry was an assistant AD in Knoxville in the late 2000s, he was part of the athletic department staff that fired longtime coach Phil Fulmer in 2008 and replaced him with Lane Kiffin.

Kiffin only lasted one year with the Volunteers before bolting to USC and becoming Public Enemy No. 1 in Knoxville. He has proceeded to troll the Vols (and USC, for that matter) several times since then.

On Thursday, Kiffin made a light-hearted joke about returning to Tennessee now that Currie has been named the school’s athletic director:

Though it was a joke, it probably won’t go over well in Knoxville, where there are still plenty of bad memories from Kiffin’s one year as the Vols’ head coach.

The Vols went 7-6 in Kiffin’s one year at the helm, falling to Virginia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.
