It was a wild year for the Ole Miss football program. The Rebels posted a 10-2 regular season before losing to Baylor in the Sugar Bowl and then had to endure offseason conjecture that Lane Kiffin would likely bolt for job openings at Miami, Florida, or LSU, among others.

Kiffin is back, however, and big things are expected from Ole Miss once again in 2022.

Replacing Matt Corral at quarterback will be among the biggest storylines for the Rebels this season. To date, Kiffin hasn’t named a starter between sophomores Luke Altmyer and USC transfer Jaxson Dart.

On Wednesday during the SEC coaches teleconference, Kiffin was asked again about the QB competition and said that his decision to not name a starter is truly indicative of how close things things are.

“We’re not holding,” Kiffin added. “We haven’t made a decision, so it’s not a competitive withhold or anything. The guys are incredibly even.”

Kifin was also asked Wednesday about the addition of TCU transfer Zach Evans.

The 6-0, 215-pound junior from Houston was a 5-star recruit in the 2020 class according to 247Sports. He rushed for 1,063 yards and nine touchdowns in 2 seasons as a Horned Frog and averaged better than 7 yards per carry.

“He’s done a great job coming over,” said Kiffin of Evans. “Really prepared really hard and has been a leader on and off the field. … Excited to see him perform on Saturday.”

The Rebels opener against Troy is set for 4 p.m. (ET) and will be televised by the SEC Network.
