The Lane Kiffin Sweepstakes saw a unique twist late Saturday morning, as the current Ole Miss coach reportedly wants to finish the season with the Rebels – and is reportedly threatening chaos on his way out the door if he can’t stay on to coach in the College Football Playoff.
On3Sports’s Brett McMurphy reported that Kiffin is “essentially demanding to finish the season (with Ole Miss) while simultaneously threatening to poach” both the Rebels roster and coaching staff if he can’t keep coaching the team in the postseason.
McMurphy added that his source told him, “It’s unfortunately gotten even messier than expected as emotions are high.”
Kiffin, 50, called a 10 a.m. ET team meeting Sunday morning with an announcement regarding his future. He is being courted for the LSU Tigers vacancy, but also by Ole Miss to stay in Oxford.
Kiffin’s Rebels turned in their first 11-win season in program history and are virtual locks for a College Football Playoff home game – though the coach leaving could throw a wrinkle into the CFP committee’s decision-making process. Ole Miss could have advanced to the SEC Championship Game had Auburn upset Alabama on Saturday night, but the Crimson Tide earned a 27-20 victory at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
