The passion college football fans feel is among the best traits the sport has to offer, but Lane Kiffin said Monday that he felt a different side of it as he was trying to get to the University-Oxford Airport on Sunday to depart for LSU.

“(I had someone say to me) ‘Could you call a cop that you know that will help you, because you personally know them and you are leaving the state?’ And you gotta call them, because you’re driving with your son… and people are screaming at you and trying to run you off the road,” Kiffin said at his introductory news conference. “I don’t know what they’re going to do. That affects you.

“And that airport scene, and all the things being said, I understand it – it’s the passion. But they’re saying that about you, that you thought you did a really good job for 6 years for them.”

Several irate Rebels fans ushered out Kiffin and his family at the airport, but the coach said the feeling was completely different when they landed in Baton Rouge.

“When I got off that plane, and I saw the board there and the leadership there, I felt the power of this place,” Kiffin said. “Then I get in the car and we are driving out, all the fans there at the airport with their excitement and their passion.”
