Following a 41-3 win over Kentucky, Les Miles addressed the media Monday afternoon. Here are some dispatches from his press conference.
- Miles encouraged the LSU crowd to stay the entire game (fans have been leaving early throughout the season), and promises that it will be a “magical place” inside of Tiger Stadium. Miles said he’s not disappointed in fans for leaving early, as its not his place to tell a family how to spend its time, but the end of games are worth staying for.
- Terrence Magee, Danielle Hunter and Jamal Adams were singled out by the coach for their excellent play against Kentucky. Kendell Beckwith, who made his second start at middle linebacker, was improved as well.
- Miles acknowledged how difficult it will be to move the ball on Mississippi with “regularity,” says their speed and athleticism makes them a difficult matchup. Miles repeated calls the Rebels and quality and talented team.
- On the quarterback position, Miles said that any good plan in the short term will be productive in the long term. Miles said both Anthony Jennings and Brandon Harris are improving and enjoying their preparation. He is pleased with both of them.
- Miles said the play of the defensive line, along with Beckwith, have helped the team to slow down zone-read attacks. He said the defensive line is using its hands better
- All three phases of the team are improving, according to Miles. He called the offensive line one of the best “fivesomes” not just in the SEC but in the country.
- LSU will need to have balance not just against Ole Miss on Saturday but going forward with the season. Miles said he’d like for his team to be able to throw the ball. On that note, Miles said that Jennings’ accuracy issues have more to do with his decision making than actual throw accuracy. Miles said that when Jennings misses on a read, it can lead to inaccurate throws. Jennings is improving his accuracy, though.
- LSU didn’t take a shot at the end zone at the end of the first half against Kentucky because Miles was concerned about a throw short of the end zone being caught in bounds. The team is trying to improve on situations like that, so Miles took the points.
- LSU sent the tape of Kentucky wide receiver Dorian Baker’s possible helmet-to-helmet hit on Beckwith to the SEC. Miles wants the conference to review the play for a targeting violation.
- Miles said that special teams “always have a place in our curriculum.” Credits coordinator Bradley Dale Peveto for his enthusiasm that he brings to that unit.
- The coach said he isn’t surprised by much when it comes to the SEC. “I just hope we’re not surprised when we take the field.”
