The first ever early signing period for college football is set to begin this Wednesday, and multiple people continue to wrestle with the new rule.
Nick Saban is one coach who hammered the early signing period during a press conference last week. He said the earlier period puts more stress on coaches and players across the board.
ESPN’s Greg McElroy also took time to breakdown the new period Monday, and he believes the early signing date does take a lot away from the student-athlete.
ESPNU Radio shared audio of his comments:
“If I had only one scholarship offer on December 20, I would be forced to pull the trigger,” said McElroy, “But more scholarships might come in the next four weeks…I think it does take away a lot from the student athlete.”
McElroy also estimated that the majority of players will sign early in December:
“The first Wednesday in February is going to be 10% of the guys signing,” McElroy explained. He sees those waiting to sign in February will be 5-star recruits “playing the hat dance” or under-the-radar players who receive an offer late.
