LISTEN: Greg McElroy explains why Alabama may not be No. 1 in debut Playoff rankings

Alabama has been No. 1 in the AP Poll since the start of the season, but fans may be surprised when the first College Football Playoff rankings come out.
ESPN’s Greg McElroy said that he would not be surprised to see Penn State jump Alabama for the No. 1 spot on the first CFP rankings. He did say that he believes Alabama is still the best team in the country, but the resume of the Crimson Tide is not quite as strong at this point.
Alabama beat Florida State in the season opener, but Florida State has since fallen off with a disappointing season. The next toughest opponent for the Tide so far has been Texas A&M.
Meanwhile, Penn State is coming off of a blowout win over No. 19 Michigan. Penn State will follow that up with a trip to take on No. 6 Ohio State this weekend.
ESPNU Radio shared audio of McElroy’s comments on Twitter Tuesday:

It is worth noting that the No. 1 ranking for the CFP has guaranteed nothing through the first three seasons. A No. 1 seed has never won the Playoff with a No. 4 and two No. 2 seeds winning so far.
