How long has it been since Alabama lost to Vanderbilt? Need to find out? Who you gonna call?
“Ghostbusters!”
It’s been since September of 1984 that the Crimson Tide fell to Vanderbilt, a streak of 21 games. “Ghostbusters” was the No. 1 movie in America that month. The No. 1 song? “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” by Tina Turner.
The 21-game streak is the longest that any SEC West team has over any other SEC foe. And it’s not even close. The second-longest streak belongs to Auburn, which has beaten South Carolina eight straight times.
Here are the longest streaks for all seven SEC West teams:
Alabama: The Crimson Tide’s 21-game streak over the Commodores isn’t far off the school’s longest against an SEC opponent. Alabama’s longest SEC streak ever is a 22-gamer against Mississippi State from 1958 to 1979. They’ll have to wait to add No. 22 on Vanderbilt. The teams don’t play this year.
Arkansas: The Razorbacks’ longest winning streak is against Vanderbilt, but it’s only three games long. Vandy won in 2005 but has since lost in 2006, 2010 and 2011.
Auburn: The Tigers have beaten South Carolina eight straight times. South Carolina’s last win was 1933, long before they joined the SEC. The eight straight wins all came since 1996.
LSU: The Tigers have beaten Vanderbilt seven straight times, last losing back in 1990. LSU’s longest winning streak against an SEC West foe is against Texas A&M. That winning streak is up to five games.
Mississippi State: The Bulldogs have beaten Kentucky, their annual cross-division rival, seven times in a row. The Wildcats last won in 2008.
Ole Miss: The Rebels have a three-game winning streak against Vanderbilt for its longest SEC streak. They have two-game winning streaks against SEC West foes Texas A&M, Alabama, and Mississippi State.
Texas A&M: The Aggies have beaten Arkansas four straight times since joining the SEC, but it hasn’t been easy. The last two games went to overtime.
