LOOK: Arizona State’s alternate helmets pay tribute to Pat Tillman, U.S. Military

Arizona State will honor Pat Tillman when the team squares off against Colorado on Nov. 4.
Tillman’s story is truly remarkable and one that continues to impact people to this day. He played linebacker for the Sun Devils and was named the Defensive Player of the Year for the Pac-10 in 1997. Tillman went on to be drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the seventh round of the 1998 NFL Draft.
Tillman switched from linebacker to safety upon reaching the NFL and played well in four seasons with Arizona. He recorded 247 total tackles, 2.5 sacks, and three interceptions in 60 games with the Cardinals.
He had established himself as a consistent player, but he turned down a contract offer following the 2001 season to enlist in the U.S. Army. Unfortunately, Tillman was killed in 2004 while on deployment in Afghanistan.
Tillman’s death was a tragedy, but his story continues to live on and inspire others. Arizona State unveiled a statue of Tillman at the start of this season and will also honor him and others with special uniforms when the Sun Devils take on Colorado. The helmet of the uniform will feature the name of every player and coach from Arizona State that has served in the military.
