Sophomore DL Tedarrell “T.J.” Slaton has a lofty goal in mind: become the Florida record holder for sacks in a single season. The current record-holder, Alex Brown (13 sacks in 1999), is all for it.

“Go get it young man… it’s been there too long,” Brown tweeted upon seeing Slaton’s remark. In his Florida days, Brown was a menace attacking SEC quarterbacks from the edge (word has it mentioning his name to Tennessee fans triggers flashbacks). Slaton, listed at 6-4, 358 pounds, does more of his work on the interior.

It’s an incredibly lofty goal when one considers Slaton did not record a sack as a freshman, but things have changed in Gainesville. New strength coach Nick Savage has the Gators playing stronger and leaner. Also, new defensive coordinator runs a notably more aggressive scheme than his predecessor, Randy Shannon.

It will be interesting to see if Slaton becomes a pass-rushing force in his sophomore season. And it’s awesome to see Alex Brown wants someone else to claim the school record he set last century.
