New Mississippi State coach Joe Moorhead is a fan of fun nicknames and catch phrases, and you don’t need to look any farther than his Twitter handle, “BallCoachJoeMo” to find that sentiment.
We’re not sure if he’s learned the most popular legend for the Bulldogs’ cowbell tradition, but T-shirts and billboards have become popular with his name and the famous catch phrase: “MoorCowbell.”
The common legend says that a wandering Jersey cow became a good luck charm in the mid-20th century after having strolled onto the field during an ultimately victorious home football game. Over time, students began bringing cowbells to continue the tradition, according to the school.
The Clarion Ledger newspaper ran a headline with the phrase to announce the selection of Moorhead, a former offensive coordinator at Penn State.
