Hall of Fame Notre Dame and Arkansas head coach Lou Holtz has passed away at the age of 89, his family announced on Wednesday, March 4.
Holtz is one of the most recognizable figures in college football history and widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches the game has ever seen. He spent 5 decades in coaching, making stops at Arkansas, South Carolina, NC State, William & Mary and Minnesota alongside Notre Dame, where he led the Fighting Irish to a national championship in 1988. Following his time at Notre Dame, Holtz joined CBS as a college football analyst before coming out of retirement in 1999 to take the vacant South Carolina job.
While he’s known for his 11-year stint at Notre Dame, Holtz also had some memorable years with the Razorbacks, too. He brought Arkansas to 6 total bowl games and finished with a 60-21-2 record across his 7 seasons in Fayetteville.
Across his career, Holtz claimed the Paul Bryant Award twice (1977, 1988) and finished with a college head coaching record of 249-132-7. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008.
Notre Dame released the following video commemorating Holtz after the news of his passing on Wednesday:
