Jay Johnson and the LSU Tigers have landed a big-time commitment in the NCAA transfer portal.
According to Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball, Indiana State’s Luis Hernandez has pledged to LSU. While Hernandez is a significant addition for Johnson’s team, the Tigers can’t pop the champagne yet.
Having completed his junior season, Hernandez is eligible for the 2024 MLB Draft. Clubs will certainly be interested in Hernandez’s bat. In 2023, Hernandez posted a .359 batting average with 23 home runs and 76 RBIs.

If Hernandez elects to play his senior season in Baton Rouge, he can provide an instant impact to the lineup. In his career, he has started 144 games as a first baseman, catcher and designated hitter.

LSU is coming off an up-and-down 2024 season. The defending national champions stumbled in early SEC play, going just 3-12 in the first half of conference competition. The Tigers went 10-5 over the last 15 regular-season SEC contests, reaching a traditional NCAA Tournament qualification of 13 SEC wins.
In Hoover, LSU was one of the hottest teams in the SEC Tournament, reaching the championship game. The Tigers went to North Carolina for the Chapel Hill Regional, hosted by No. 4 national seed UNC. The Tigers fought off elimination twice, but ultimately fell to the Tar Heels in the final game.
This season’s LSU team had 3 players hit 15+ homers: Jared Jones (.301, 28 HR), Tommy White (.330, 24 HR) and Hayden Travinski (.271, 16 HR). Travinski has exhausted his eligibility, while White and Jones are candidates for the draft.
TRANSFER UPDATE: @LSUbaseball picks up a big-time power addition to its lineup in Indiana State transfer Luis Hernandez, I’m told. Hernandez, 6-1, 190, had a monster 2024 with a .359 average, 23 homers and 76 RBIS along with a 1.114 OPS. #LSUhttps://t.co/F2mEcVz9t4
