LSU DB Dashawn Spears earns national Defensive Player of the Week honor for performance against Florida
LSU completely shut down the Florida offense last Saturday night at Tiger Stadium, making life miserable for Gators quarterback DJ Lagway, who threw 5 interceptions in the 20-10 Tigers victory.
Two of those interceptions were made by sophomore safety Dashawn Spears, a Louisiana native who’s making LSU fans very happy that he stayed home to play his college football. Spears’ stellar night harassing Florida‘s receivers was rewarded on Tuesday, when he was named the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week by the Football Writers Association of America.
Spears and the talented Tiger defense shut out the Gators in the second half, and while they were doing that Spears made a highlight-reel play that paved the way for No. 3 LSU to get to 3-0 on the season. With Florida still hanging around, down just 13-10 midway through the third quarter, Spears made 1 of his interceptions and made it really count, too. He took the interception back 58 yards for a touchdown that gave LSU some breathing room.
His pick-6 delivered the final points of the game and the only points of the second half, and the Football Writers Association of America celebrated Spears with this post on Tuesday:
Spears and his LSU teammates will have a chance to go 4-0 when they host SE Louisiana on Saturday night in a 7:45 p.m. ET kickoff on the SEC Network.
