LSU Dominance: Following CWS championship, Greg McElroy asks if a CFP is next for Tigers

LSU enjoyed a pretty successful 2022-23 athletic season. Football won 10 games in a transition year. Softball hosted a Regional. Women’s basketball won a national championship. Baseball just won the College World Series.

“What a time to be alive in Baton Rouge, Louisiana,” ESPN analyst Greg McElroy said Tuesday on the Always College Football podcast.

And then McElroy pointed out something interesting.

“Is this a sign of things to come?” McElroy asked. “Jay Johnson (wins a) championship in Year No. 2. Kim Mulkey (wins a) championship in Year No. 2. And, Brian Kelly going into Year No. 2 as the head coach of the LSU Tigers. People (are) bullish on LSU. Just saying. If history repeats itself, LSU is poised for a pretty amazing run.”

Mulkey led the Tigers to a 26-6 record in her first season at the helm of the women’s basketball program. Johnson got the Tigers to 40-22 in Year 1. Kelly’s Tigers went 10-4.

And it’s not exactly going out on a limb putting LSU in the national championship conversation.

The Tigers are preseason No. 4 in ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI). The model gives LSU the eighth-best odds of making it to the College Football Playoff. Georgia and Alabama are among the favorites to make the CFP, and Kelly managed a 32-31 win over the Crimson Tide in Year 1.

Quarterback Jayden Daniels returns in 2023 for his second year as the starter. LSU added former Notre Dame running back Logan Diggs to the backfield and former Alabama wideout Aaron Anderson to the receiving corps — just a pair of standouts in a transfer class that ranked No. 2 nationally.

LSU has the goods to be in the conversation and to keep the good times rolling.

Or, you know, keep the Jell-O shots flowing.
