The LSU football team had a busy Friday off the field. Players organized a march around noon local time that led to team meetings with the interim school president Tom Galligan, athletic director Scott Woodward and head coach Ed Orgeron. A scheduled 6 p.m. CT practice did not happen, per LSU Country.

Wilson Alexander of The Advocate reports that JaCoby Stevens and Andre Anthony were inspired by the boycotts and strikes across sports in protest of the shooting of Jacob Blake and organized Friday’s march.

“We need to do something,” Stevens told Alexander.

Alexander reports that around 2 p.m. local time the players arrived outside the university administration building with Stevens, Anthony, Ja’Marr Chase, Myles Brennan and Chris Curry at the front of the group.

Galligan welcomed the players inside, where players and the interim president had a conversation about racism and inequality, including issues nationally and on campus.

“We want to hear their voice,” Galligan told The Advocate.

After the conversation with Galligan, a meeting with Orgeron and Woodward took place. Players shared personal experiences with their head coach.

“I need to know more about it,” Orgeron said. “I don’t go through the same things they go through. I don’t have the same feelings that they have. I go from work to home and may go out to dinner. They face different things that I heard about today that I never knew before.”

Stevens felt Friday was productive.

“I think we’re going to grow as a football team and as a family from that,” Stevens said.

“I hope it encourages people to bring up the conversation,” he added. “I know that this march from Tiger Stadium to here is not going to make 100% complete change. But I do feel like that it’s going to encourage people and let people know we hear you. We’re in there with you. We’re going to continue to fight until we become equal.”

Orgeron supported the players’ decision to hold the march and meetings. He said the team will return to practice Monday.
