LSU landed a commitment from three-star DE Justin Thomas on Saturday morning.
Getting Thomas to commit to the Tigers was a big deal, as his stepfather is former Alabama star Atlas Herrion.
The 6-foot-5, 255-pound lineman attends Spanish Fort High School in Alabama, where Herrion is an assistant coach. According to AL.com, though, Herrion is cool with his stepson’s decision to play for an Alabama rival:
“I’m fine with it,” said Herrion, an assistant coach at Spanish Fort. “I’m totally fine with it. LSU fits Justin. The style of defense they play is really perfect for him. It’s close to the style we play at Spanish Fort. It’s a 3-4 scheme and they attack. This is perfect for Justin and it is not too far from home.”
Spanish Fort coach Ben Blackmon said he expects Thomas to blossom into a star for the Tigers:
“I think the sky is limit for him,” Blackmon said of Thomas. “I think he will just continue to get better and better. He will eventually turn into a really good football player at LSU. He’s a good kid, a high-character kid and he is a great athlete. That is a winning combination.”
Besides Alabama and LSU, Thomas was also considering SEC schools like Tennessee, South Carolina and Arkansas.
According to 247Sports, Thomas is the No. 20 strong-side defensive end in the class of 2017 and the No. 28 overall recruit from the state of Alabama.
