LSU was already a bit thin at linebacker heading into the spring but now depth at the position will be nonexistent following this news.
According to Ross Dellenger of The Advocate, senior linebackers Donnie Alexander and Devin Voorhies will be limited during spring football after undergoing offseason shoulder surgeries. With LSU running a 3-4 defense under coordinator Dave Aranda, having two key inside linebackers miss time with so little depth at the position could make for an interesting spring.
With both of last season’s starters, Duke Riley and Kendell Beckwith, now chasing their NFL dreams and training for the draft, promising sophomore Devin White will likely be asked to fill in the void and fill one of the spots. On the plus side, with additional reps likely being thrown his way this spring, White could quickly develop into the next great LSU linebacker in time for the fall.
While depth at linebacker will be a huge concern this spring, the summer arrivals of recent signees Jacob Phillips, No. 1-rated inside linebacker for 2017, and Tyler Taylor, the No. 11-rated inside linebacker for 2017, should give the Tigers superior depth when both Alexander and Voorhies return to the lineup with their shoulders at or near 100 percent healthy.
