Maalik Murphy spent 2 years with the Texas football program before electing to enter the transfer portal. Now, he appears to have made a decision on his next program.

Murphy will transfer to Duke and play under 1st-year head coach Manny Diaz, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. He will have 3 years of eligibility remaining.

A 4-star recruit and the No. 9 quarterback in the country — according to 247Sports — when he signed with the Longhorns out of the class of 2022, Murphy redshirted as a true freshman. In 2023, as the backup to Quinn Ewers, he played in 7 games and started twice, throwing for 477 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions.

Seeking an opportunity to start elsewhere, he entered the transfer portal on Dec. 13. He has apparently elected to continue his career in the ACC, joining Diaz in Durham.

Diaz was hired as head coach of the Blue Devils program after Mike Elko left for the same position at Texas A&M. His most recent stop was Penn State, where he was the defensive coordinator for 2 seasons after serving as Miami’s head coach from 2019 to 2021.
